Speech by Ambassador Li Zhengjun at the Hand-over Ceremony of Medical Apparatus and Instruments
2003/04/25
Ladies and gentlemen,

Today, it is with great pleasure that I hand over some medical apparatus and instruments to the representative of the Government of Papua New Guinea.

I arrived in Port Moresby, capital of Papua New Guinea only ten days ago as the new Chinese Ambassador. As soon as I stepped on your beautiful country I was deeply touched by the warm friendship between our two peoples. The friendly PNG people have left a deep impression on me.

In April 2002, an official delegation from the Ministry of Health of China visited PNG, and through consultation signed with the PNG side an agreement on the assignment of a Chinese medical team to work in Papua New Guinea. In October and November of the same year, the Chinese Medical Team members came to Port Moresby and started to work almost immediately. They are now working shoulder by shoulder with your doctors, and have given full play to their outstanding medical knowledge, skills and rich clinical experiences to serve the local people. According to the same agreement, the Chinese Government will provide RMB ¥300,000 worth of medical apparatus and instruments as well as medicine. The instruments that I am handing over today are part of it. Some more medicine from China will be delivered later.

Although I'm quite new here, I have noticed that our two countries maintain a very sound relationship with each other. Apart from the good medical cooperation, we enjoy good relations in bilateral economic cooperation and trade. PNG is now the biggest trading partner of China among the South Pacific Island nations, with the highest trade volume of US $225 million in 2000 and US $190 million in 2002. And the trade balance is in PNG's favor. Besides, our cooperation in the fields of fishery, culture and the defence have all developed smoothly. As the new Chinese Ambassador, I will do my utmost to promote the further development of the friendship and cooperation between our two countries.

Finally, I wish to express my sincere thanks to the PNG government and the management and staff of the Port Moresby General Hospital for the good care that you have given to our Chinese doctors. I am confident that our cooperation in the medical field will be more fruitful in the days to come.

Thank you.
