Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the
African Union Maputo The Republic of
Mozambique
Beijing,
9 July 2003
I am writing to
extend, on behalf of the Chinese Government and in my own
name, our warmest congratulations and best wishes on the
convocation of the second Assembly of Heads of State and
Government of the African Union.
The creation
of the African Union (AU) in July 2002 marks a new milestone
of the African integration process. The New
Partnership for Africas Development (NEPAD), which is
launched and will be implemented by the AU as its Program of
Action, reflects the strong desire of the African continent
to seek greater economic and social development.
It is significant that you, the African leaders,
are holding this summit to discuss the important issues of
how to build up the AU and how to respond to the new
situation and meet the global challenges. I am
sure the summit will inspire the continent to carry on the
Pan-African spirit and push for still greater progress in
the cause of peace and development in
Africa.
China and Africa share profound
friendship and enjoy extensive cooperation. With
the improvement of the mechanism of the Forum on
China-Africa Cooperation and the implementation of the
relevant follow-up activities, China-Africa friendship and
mutually beneficial cooperation will grow stronger and
closer. The Chinese Government attaches great
importance to unity and cooperation with African countries.
Come what may, China will always be Africas
sincere friend and trustworthy partner. The
Chinese Government will, as always, support the development
of the AU and the implementation of NEPAD, and work
unremittingly with African countries for peace and
development in Africa and for a new, stable and long-term
China-Africa partnership featuring equality and mutual
benefit.
I wish the Assembly a complete
success.
(Signed)
Wen
Jiabao
