An important partner to China, says envoy
2010/05/31

China regards its diplomatic relations with Papua New Guinea(PNG) as important in the Pacific region.

"Our mutual and bilateral cooperation is important because we see PNG as a true friend and partner in the Pacific region," China's ambassador designate to PNG Qiu Bohua said after prestenting his letter of credence to Governor-General Sir Paulias Matane at Government House yesterday.

Qiu replaces Wei Ruixing who was recalled after his term of foreign mission expired this month.

Qiu was welcomed by a guard of honour provided by the Royal PNG Police Constabulary band before presenting his credential to Sir Paulias.

He said he was committed to the strengthening of friendly relations and cooperation which existed since 1976.

"The Chinese government is ever ready to work with PNG to boost friendly exchanges and mutually beneficial cooperation in various fields to make new progress in the bilateral relations,"he said. Sir Paulias said the frequent high level visits by leaders and senior government officials from both sides had added impetus in enhancing and consolidating understanding between the leaders and senior government officials of both countries in advancing mutual interests.

"This has facilitated the promotion of trade and investment activities, hence PNG is today China's major trading partner among Pacific countries,"he said.

He said China would be a significant importer of PNG's liquefied natural gas as well as nickel and cobalt ore which China has invested USD 1.4 billion.
